Problem

Stress during pregnancy can cause issues during childbirth and for the child later in life.

Spring 2024 | 4 Week Project | Scope: 2030

“Psychological stress during pregnancy produces lasting undesirable changes in both mothers and their children.”

-Psychology Today, “Stress and Pregnancy: How It Affects an Unborn Child's Brain”

Women who reported high levels of stress while pregnant were more likely to have children with ADHD symptoms, mental health issues, or who exhibited more difficulties with aggressive or hostile behavior.

"If the mom is anxious in pregnancy, the fetus could be exposed to greater levels of cortisol. That can subtly change the setpoints for the child's future response to stress.”

-Catherine Monk, professor of medical psychology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York City.

Our Users

Based on Interviews

After finding out she was pregnant, Alexis began to worry about how her pregnancy was going, which was affecting her day to day life.

At-home monitors are not always recommended. Some people find that their anxiety may increase with monitor use. Others may get a false sense of security.

Introducing MAIVA

Features + Use

MAIVA uses machine learning to distill insights collected from the Monitor Patch. It learns what is normal for each user’s body, and relays important information in a digestable format.

Test results come in instantly and clearly. MAIVA works as a direct line of communication with the user’s healthcare provider.

Design Goal

Create a device that supports mental health by decreasing the stressors of pregnancy.

A quick glance can put a worried mind at ease.

If the user wants more detailed information, they can access the monitor patch readout.
